Ryan Kane - School of Computer Science Student

I chose to study Computer Science at UCD because of my avid interest in technology and the great opportunities it afforded me going forward. I have always been really passionate about technology, and always intended on pursuing a career within the field.  I enjoyed Science subjects at school with the investigative, logical and problem-solving skills I gained here being of great benefit to me in this course. I am involved with a variety of societies on campus including ‘SciSoc’, the Science Society here in UCD, an exciting community with which to be involved. We organise numerous charity fundraisers and other events each year to promote Science within the university.  Upon graduating I intend on pursuing a career in the technology consultancy field, exercising technical expertise within the business sector.

Hongbo Sun - School of Computer Science Student

I am from mainland of China. I am currently studying the BSc Computer Science because I enjoy the process of creating and building something from scratch, and computer programming enables me to do this.  Ireland is being called European Silicon Valley with its rapid growth in technology sector. Google, Microsoft, Facebook just to name a few all set up their EMEA headquarter in Ireland. In addition to that, Forbes magazine ranked Ireland as the “Number one place to do business in Europe”. Because of all these and many more, Ireland became my first choice for studying abroad back in 2011.  After my graduation in UCD, I would like to find a software development related job in Ireland and eventually to launch my own company. The fitness and sports centre in UCD is a very good place to relax after studies, especially with an Olympics-sized swimming pool!

Jenni Parry - School of Computer Science Student

I have always had an interest in the IT industry and hoped for a successful position somewhere. Although I didn’t know exactly what field I wanted to enter. I knew that whatever career path I chose, a third level qualification was imperative.  While studying Computer Science, my eyes have been opened to all the career opportunities available. UCD has enabled me to realise what I want from Computer Science and I now know what I can achieve. There is an amazing support network available, with computer and maths support centres. UCD has giving me the tools and skills I need to have a successful career.  Last summer I participated in a 14 week internship with Microsoft. I had an amazing experience and learnt a lot and was asked to return this summer. I would not have had this opportunity otherwise and would highly recommend UCD.

Evelyn Balfe, Business Analyst, Amdocs Changing Worlds, BSc (Hons) Computer Science, PhD

During my UCD Computer Science degree, I learnt how to logically approach problems and identify innovative solutions. After my degree I completed a PhD in "Personalised Web Search", and then I worked as a consultant in financial services with Accenture. I am currently a Business Analyst in the Innovation Centre at Amdocs Changing Worlds where I combine my research skills with my business experience. I am grateful that my career has allowed me to pursue such varied career opportunities.
